After battling a major emergency fire at a single-story commercial structure in San Pedro for more than two hours, Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters were able to save the majority of the building, the department reported Wednesday.

Firefighters responded at 9:02 p.m. Tuesday to the 1600 block of S. Pacific Ave. and West 16th Street regarding a fire at a bicycle rental shop and a car repair business housed in the same building. When they arrived at the scene, fire crews encountered flames that began in an attic and eventually spread to the bicycle shop and through the roof, said LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

Using ladder pipes and heavy stream hand lines to “drown” the fire from the exterior, LAFD crews were able to gain control of the blaze, Stewart said.

Over 100 firefighters fought the fire and the LAFD Arson Section arrived to investigate the cause of the fire, Stewart said.
