A woman was hoisted from the rain-swollen Tujunga Wash Friday in the San Fernando Valley as rains were tapering but continuing in parts of Southern California.

Firefighters responded about 8 a.m. Friday to the wash in the area of Branford Street, north of Roscoe Boulevard in the Arleta area, and located a woman who appeared to be in her 20s in the water, floating rapidly downstream, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Middleton.

Ground crews coordinated with the department’s Air Operations unit to effect a hoist operation using a cable and harness to lift the woman from the rushing water onto a hovering helicopter, Middleton said.

By then, the woman had been washed a good distance away from her original reported location, she said.

Once she and the rescuing crew member were aboard the chopper, the woman was treated for apparent minor injuries and hypothermia while being flown directly to a hospital, Middleton said.

A search of the wash turned up no other people or animals who needed help, she said.
