Two spot fires that erupted Thursday along the Santa Ana River bottom in Riverside were quickly knocked down, without damage to surrounding structures.
The non-injury blazes were reported at noon Thursday in the area of the Mission Inn Avenue bridge and Scout Lane, within an old Boy Scout camp, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
The agency said multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered the fires — each roughly a tenth of an acre in size — burning at a slow rate of spread.
Firefighters established hose lays and gained full containment on the first fire by 12:25 p.m. The second was stopped less than 10 minutes later, according to reports from the scene.
None of the abandoned structures nearby sustained damage.
Crews were expected to finish mopping up by 2 p.m.
There was no word on what might have triggered the fires. However, the river bottom is replete with transient encampments, and debris, cooking and warming fires are common year-round.
