The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a windblown dust advisory Thursday for parts of the Coachella Valley.

The advisory will be in place until 3 a.m. Saturday in the areas of Cathedral City, Indio, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs and La Quinta due to air quality reaching “unhealthy” or worse levels.

Gusty winds up to 45 mph were expected to cause periods of elevated particle pollution, with the northwest Coachella Valley expected to experience the highest impacts.

The agency advised residents in the impacted areas to limit exposure by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed or seeking alternate shelter; avoid vigorous physical activity; run air conditioning and/or an air purifier; and to minimize dust pollution by stabilizing loose soil and slowing down while driving on dirt roads.

Air quality can be checked at aqmd.gov/AQImap.
