A brush fire that erupted Monday adjacent to Interstate 15 in Temescal Valley burned about a dozen acres and threatened Interstate 15, prompting a partial closure of the freeway, before crews stopped the flames.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 11:40 a.m. Monday in the area of Mayhew and Temescal Canyon roads, near northbound I-15, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate rate in medium brush.
Three Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter initiated runs on the brusher shortly after noon, blunting its progress and enabling firefighters to establish tentative containment lines.
As the flames spread alongside I-15, California Highway Patrol officers shut down two of four northbound lanes at Indian Truck Trail for public safety.
At 12:55 p.m., the fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped, and crews were making steady progress encircling the blaze, according to reports from the scene. Full containment was expected by 2 p.m. All Cal Fire aircraft departed at 1 p.m.
No homes or other structures were damaged.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
