A two-alarm brush fire on a hillside between the northbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway and Pearblossom Highway in Acton was 47% contained Sunday with its progress stopped at 300 acres.
The Lemon Fire was first reported at 2:11 p.m. Saturday with a second alarm requested at 2:44 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The blaze had burned about 60 acres as of 3:35 p.m. with evacuation orders issued for two communities next to Pearblossom Highway, the department reported. It grew to 167 acres by 4 p.m. and approximately 190 acres by 4:50 p.m., according to the department.
The fire had grown to 300 acres about 7:15 p.m. and was 27% contained by lines of cleared vegetation, department spokesmen Keith Navarre told City News Service.
The blaze’s progress was stopped at 8:43 p.m., the department announced.
Evacuation orders were issued for four areas because of immediate threat to life and evacuation warnings for eight others due to potential threat to life and or property, according to Cal Fire.
U.S. Forest Service air tankers and helicopters assigned to the Angeles National Forest joined in the firefight and Cal Fire aircraft reloaded retardant at Fox Field in Lancaster. There were 177 personnel assigned to the fire from 81 units and with eight aircraft dropping water or fire retardant from helicopters and fixed-wing airplanes, Navarre said.
A shelter was set up for evacuees at the Lancaster YMCA, Navarre said.
There were no reports of injuries or structures damaged, Navarre said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
