A brush fire that erupted near the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in the community of Thermal charred 50 acres before Cal Fire crews stopped the forward rate of spread and held containment at 20% Friday.
The non-injury blaze was reported about 10:15 p.m. Thursday in the 86100 block of Airport Boulevard, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency stated that nine engines, including an engine from the Palm Springs Fire Department, responded to a 50-acre vegetation fire burning at a moderate rate of spread until firefighters stopped the raging blaze shortly before 2:30 a.m. Friday. Crews remained throughout the night to perform extensive mop-up.
Deputy Manny Villegas Way to Tyler Street remained closed, and the blaze was held at 20% containment as of 8 a.m.
There were no evacuations, authorities said.
The department urged nearby motorists to avoid the area as fire crews work to improve containment lines, fire officials said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
