Flames tore through a two-story apartment building in Beverly Hills Wednesday, collapsing the structure’s roof during a firefight that landed two firefighters in a hospital.
The fire was reported at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at 232 S. Rexford Drive, south of Wilshire Boulevard.
A spokeswoman for the Beverly Hills Fire Department told reporters at the scene that all occupants were believed to have safely gotten out of the building, which was mostly engulfed in flames when crews arrived.
As for the two injured firefighters, one sustained a minor burn and the other suffered from heat exhaustion. Both were taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for treatment.
Temperatures in Beverly Hills were in the upper 90s on Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Fire Department sent units to assist the Beverly Hills Fire Department in battling the conflagration.
“Neighboring buildings adjacent to the blaze were evacuated,” according a city government social media post. “As firefighters attacked the fire, the roof began collapsing, so firefighters retreated and are using area ladder trucks to battle the blaze.”
After about an hour, visible flames were doused but firefighters continued dousing the structure with water from ladder hoses.
The fire was declared out about 12:45 p.m., a city official said.
Nearby Beverly Vista Middle School was temporarily placed under a shelter-in-place order as crews fought the fire, but student pickups at day’s end were not expected to be affected.
Rexford Drive was expected to remain closed between Charleville Boulevard and Gregory Way as crews mopped up.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze.
