The Vernon City Council on Tuesday scheduled a Feb. 17 special election to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Councilman Michael Ybarra.

Ybarra, 61, died Sept. 26 in Sacramento.

Voters will choose a representative to serve out the remaining two years of Ybarra’s term, which expires in April 2017.

The nomination period for candidates will begin Monday and close on Nov. 24.

Ybarra’s family has resided in Vernon since the 1860s. His father, Thomas Ybarra, served on the council for 43 years. His great-uncle, Esteban Peralta, served on the council for 15 years in the 1930s and 40s, according to the city.

He is survived by his wife, Susana Rodriguez-Ybarra, and three daughters.
