A newborn girl was left at a Los Angeles County Fire Station in Palmdale on Saturday under a countywide program that enables women to give up their children without fear of prosecution, county Supervisor Don Knabe said Monday.
“It’s hard to imagine anyone wanting to give up a child, but this mother bravely made the better choice for her baby girl — no shame. No blame. No names,” said Knabe, who has championed the effort.
On Friday, another girl was left at a hospital in Tarzana.
Eleven babies have been given to the county so far this year — 124 since the Safe Surrender program was begun in 2001. Under the program, women can give up children no more than three days old at hospitals, fire stations and other spots, as long as the infant shows no sign of abuse.
