A Los Angeles city councilman is proposing a $75,000 reward for information that helps authorities track down whoever set a Dec. 8 fire that tore through a downtown apartment complex under construction alongside the Harbor (110) Freeway.
The fire flared up in the early morning and destroyed much of the Da Vinci apartment complex, causing between $25 million to $35 million in damages.
The fire also damaged two nearby office towers owned by the city. One was re-opened a few days after the fire, but the other has hundreds of broken windows and other damages that will likely take at least six months to repair, according to city officials.
Whoever set off the fire poses “an ongoing threat to the safety of the people of Los Angeles,” warranting the $75,000 reward, Councilman Jose Huizar’s motion says.
The motion will go before the City Council’s Public Safety Committee, which will decide whether to bring the reward proposal to the full City Council for approval.
