Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer is featured in a video unveiled Tuesday urging gun owners to lock their weapons away from the reach of children.
The PSA was produced by Women Against Gun Violence and released on the National Day for Gun Violence Prevention.
“Parents and caretakers need to make certain that they, their family, their friends and their neighbors keep guns locked up safely and securely,” Women Against Gun Violence board member Donna Finkelstein said.
“Children are curious and successful treasure-hunters. That means there is no safe hiding place for a loaded and unlocked gun,” she said. “It’s important to not be intimated by a conversation about safe gun storage. Our children deserve better.”
The 30-second PSA shows families of various races and ethnicities sharing stories about children who died after getting their hands on guns and telling viewers in English, Spanish and Chinese to “Lock up your guns.”

“Gun violence is a national public health and safety emergency,” Feuer said. “Our office is working on many fronts to combat violence from firearms. But we need more from our partners in Washington, D.C., to help us keep guns out of the hands of criminals and kids.”
The PSA is on Feuer’s website and will be shown on the city television channel. The “logistics” for showing the PSA on other stations “are still being worked out,” Feuer spokesman Frank Mateljan said.
Feuer also announced that within the past month, he has filed cases against 10 people on charges of concealing guns, unlawful possession of weapons and ammunition and unlawful purchase of a stun gun.
