Nixon library’s museum to close for year-long renovation

The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum will close its permanent museum galleries for a year to complete a significant renovation.

The announcement of the year-long closure comes on the 25th anniversary of the library. The museum galleries are scheduled to close Sept. 28 for the $25 million renovation, with a scheduled reopening in the fall of 2016.

“The Nixon Library’s permanent museum galleries are 25 years old and have largely remained in their original form,” said Bill Baribault, president and chief executive of the Richard Nixon Foundation. “The gallery renovation will bring new exhibits, updated technology, interactive displays and participartory learning opportunities to the visitor experience — making the Nixon Library a top destination for visitors not just in Southern California, but around the country.”

Michael Ellzey, director of the library, said, “Our mission is to create a new, more interesting and provocative look at Richard Nixon, using innovative ways to connect with visitors…. It’s time to tell a more complete and engaging story of the life and legacy of America’s 37th president using the vast archives available to us by one of the most documented presidencies in history.”

The Watergate exhibit, which documents the president’s downfall and eventual resignation, will remain unchanged since its opening in 2011.

The president’s birthplace, Nixon and his wife’s gravesites, the First Lady’s Gardens, the Presidential Helicopter and the White House East Room will remain open during the work.

Regular community events such as the annual Patriot Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day commemorations will go on as usual in the East Room and elsewhere on the grounds. The library’s research room likewise will remain open.

The renovation is being funded through private donations. The goal is to raise $25 million.
