Ceremonies will be held across the Southland Friday as elected officials, first-responders and residents gather to mark the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that left nearly 3,000 people dead.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, fire Chief Ralph Terrazas and police Chief Charlie Beck are scheduled to take part in the annual remembrance ceremony at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center in Elysian Park. A piece of metal from the World Trade Center is on display at the center.
Terrazas will also take part in a 7 p.m. ceremony at LAFD Station 88, the Sherman Oaks home of the search-and-rescue team that deployed to New York following the attacks. The station’s 9/11 memorial includes a 750-pound piece of the World Trade Center and a 100-pound piece of limestone from the Pentagon.
At Trinity Classical Academy, 28310 Kelly Johnson Parkway in Santa Clarita, members of the Young Americans for Freedom Chapter will place 2,977 American flags in remembrance of those who died in the terror strikes.
In Monterey Park, city officials will be joined by local veterans from American Legion Post 397 in an 8:30 a.m. Patriots Day observance at City Hall, 320 W. Newmark Ave.
Duarte officials, along with county sheriff and fire department representatives, will hold a remembrance ceremony themed “Honor Among Ashes.” Students from Northview Intermediate School will perform.
A 5:30 p.m. ceremony in Beverly Hills will feature a wreath-laying, bell- ringing and a police department color guard at the city’s 9/11 Memorial Garden at 445 N. Rexford Drive. Rosemead will hold its remembrance ceremony in the Civic Center Plaza, featuring a wreath-laying, flag-raising and performance of Taps.
Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian will partner with the Midtown North Hollywood Neighborhood Council and the L.A. Beautification Team for a ceremony at North Hollywood Park South, on the corner of Magnolia Boulevard and Tujunga Avenue.
