Mayor Eric Garcetti expressed support Friday for the Supreme Court to take up a legal challenge that halted President Barack Obama’s program that would have allowed some immigrants who lack proper documentation to remain in the country.
Garcetti said he and his office “stand with the Obama Administration as they ask the Supreme Court to review the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Texas v. U.S., which blocked the implementation of the President’s initiatives.”
Garcetti said that exactly one year ago, Obama announced “sweeping” executive actions to expand his Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals program to a wider set of people who were brought illegally to the United States as children, and launching another one affecting immigrant parents, called Deferred Action for Parents of Americans, that “would allow families to lawfully work to support themselves and help grow our economy.”
“We can no longer wait,” Garcetti said, with Los Angeles a city that was “built by immigrants” and where “their contributions are felt throughout our City every single day.”
“These hard-working men and women deserve the opportunity to become a part of our nation, free from the fear that they will be separated from their loved ones,” he said. “That speaks to the core of our founding principles and the values we all hold dear.”
