A 28-year-old soldier killed this week in Afghanistan was from Irvine, authorities said Wednesday.

Staff Sgt. Matthew V. Thompson died Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated near his patrol in Helmand Province, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Thompson was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group Airborne, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
