Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti denounced President Donald Trump’s proposed budget Tuesday and said it would benefit wealthy Americans while hurting those who are struggling.

“Americans deserve better than a budget that prioritizes tax cuts for people who can afford vacation homes — and guts the progress we’re fighting to make for families struggling to pay the rent,” Garcetti said.

“The administration may want to turn back the clock, but in Los Angeles we’re going to keep investing in people and programs that make our city stronger, bring our communities together, and protect equal opportunity,” he said.

Trump’s proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1 calls for a boost in defense spending along with massive cuts to safety-net programs, including Medicaid.

Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s budget director, said the changes are needed to balance the budget and help taxpayers.

“This is, I think, the first time in a long time that an administration has written a budget through the eyes of the people who are actually paying the taxes,” Mulvaney said.
