Recipients of CalFresh and CalWorks benefits accessible through debit cards are being reminded to prepare for a 24-hour service disruption that will prevent them from using their cards.
According to the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services, electronic benefits transfer — or EBT — cards will be unusable from 11 p.m. Saturday evening until 11 p.m. Sunday due to a planned statewide service outage.
EBT cards, which replaced food stamps under federally supported welfare programs, can be used for purchases at participating stores and also enable recipients to make cash withdrawals.
DPSS manages the EBT disbursals in Riverside County.
“We recognize how important these benefits are to our customers and want to ensure that we get the word out (regarding the outage), so that we can minimize the impact to them,” DPSS administrator Sayori Baldwin said.
According to county officials, the customer service line listed on each EBT card will not be in operation during the 24-hour outage, and the EBT website — www.ebt.ca.gov — additionally is down until 11 p.m. Sunday.
Cardholders were urged to do their shopping and make necessary cash withdrawals prior to the outage.
All services are slated to be restored shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday.
