Gov. Gavin Newsom said this weekend that a section of Pacific Coast Highway closed to the general public since January’s deadly Palisades Fire will be reopened by the end of next month.

“Thanks to around-the-clock work following the January LA fires, the Pacific Coast Highway is re-opening to one lane of traffic in each direction weeks ahead of schedule,” Newsom said Saturday.

The road has been restricted to residents and authorized workers for months in the Malibu and Pacific Palisades areas as cleanup work continued from the devastating disaster. Newsom said that by the end of May, the public will have access to one lane in each direction of “this iconic highway.”

A section of PCH was also closed in February due to heavy rains that triggered debris flow.

The governor also reminded residents that Tuesday (April 15) is the deadline for those with homes damaged in the Palisades or Eaton fires to opt in to the government-run, no-cost debris removal program. More information can be found at recovery.lacounty.gov.
