
“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” “The Boxtrolls” and “Big Hero 6” earned a leading five nominations each today for the 13th annual Visual Effects Society Awards, while “Interstellar” and “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” earned four.
“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” “Interstellar” and “The Hobbit” will compete for the honor for outstanding effects in an effects-driven live action film, along with “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Maleficent” and “X- Men: Days of Future Past.”
“Big Hero 6” and the “The Boxtrolls” will compete for outstanding animation in a film, with “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” “Rio 2” and “The Lego Movie.”
Nominated for outstanding supporting visual effects in a live-action film were “Birdman,” “Divergent,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game” and “Unbroken.”
The VES awards will be presented Feb. 4 at the Beverly Hilton.
During the ceremony, director J.J. Abrams will be presented with the society’s Visionary Award. The organization had planned to present Ridley Scott with a lifetime achievement award, but the presentation was postponed due to a change in Scott’s production schedule.
