“Ant Man” opened with $58 million in North American ticket sales this weekend, and that’s the 12th Marvel comic adaptation in a row to open in the number one spot, according to a spokesperson at Disney.
“Ant Man” also opened in about half of the world’s movie markets, and dealt another $56.4 million overseas this weekend, Disney analysts told Rentrak.
The No. 2 movie, “Minions,” added another $50.2 million this weekend to its domestic gross sales figure, where the “little yellow troublemakers” have sold $216.7 million in tickets in the United States and Canada, said Rentrak industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
Women were attracted by the new Amy Schumer R-rated comedy, “Trainwreck,” which opened in third place this weekend with an estimated $30.2 million in sales.
Rounding out the 10 highest-grossing films in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, as reported by the studios and gathered by Rentrak, were “Inside Out” ($11.6 million), “Jurassic World,” ($11.4 million), “Terminator Genisys ($5.4 million), “Magic Mike XXL” ($4.5 million), “Gallows” ($4 million), “Ted 2” ($2.7 million) and “Mr. Holmes, which opened in tenth place, at $2.5 million.
A new Woody Allen comedy, “Irrational Man,” opened in just five movie theaters with a $188,000 gross.
And the documentary on shooting-star singer Amy Winehouse, “Amy,” drew $1 million in a limited release in 435 theaters nationwide.
