On Sept. 27, the season debut episode “Teenage Mutant Milk-Caused Hurdles” will have Vergara playing Mrs. Berrera, who reportedly will be in the middle of a romantic rivalry between Bart and Principal Skinner.
Executive producer Al Jean said only one appearance was set, but did not rule out future episodes by Mrs. Berrera, who replaces Mrs. Krabappel, voiced by actress Marcia Wallace, who died in 2013.
Since Mrs. Krabappel’s death, Bart and his classmates have been taught by a series of substitute teachers.
Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the news, said: After Bart starts drinking a milk substitute filled with bad hormones, he experiences early puberty and grows a little mustache — as well as feelings for Mrs. Berrera, who is voiced by the “Modern Family” star.
“She’s more forgiving than Mrs. Krabappel was of Bart,” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean says of the character. “We have a situation where Bart doesn’t have a regular teacher, so she may or may not come back.”
