Meryl Streep is mum on the idea. But director Michael Moore would love to see her enter the Democratic race for president.

The liberal documentary director told a Toronto Film Festival audience Friday that the Oscar-winning star could somehow get the dormant Equal Rights Amendment passed.

“Meryl Streep could be (the tipping point),” Moore said at the premiere of his latest movie, “Where to Invade Next.”

“Look, the Republicans knew by running Ronald Reagan in 1980 that he could talk to the American people. Here, you could run a beloved person, Streep, who happens to be in the movies but is also smart and has a heart and cares about people. And all she wants is three states, Illinois, Virginia and Florida, the states that rejected the ERA, to pass it, so we could have it now.

“We just need three more, since 35 states approved it, and just write off the 12 that will never allow it.”

Moore said Streep could use “some of that magic” she learned as the witch in “Into the Woods.”

The idea resonates with some.
