In what is likely to be the final weekend of the year not dominated by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” movie-goers again made “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” the top box-office draw, according to final figures released Monday.
The finale of the “Hunger Games” film series earned $11.4 million between Friday and Sunday to claim the top spot of the weekend, while pushing its four-week take to $244.6 million, according to box office tracker Rentrak.
The film edged out the debut of director Ron Howard’s “In the Heart of the Sea,” which opened with $11 million to place second for the weekend.
Disney/Pixar’s animated “The Good Dinosaur” took third place with $10.3 million, followed by “Creed” with $10.2 million and “Krampus” with $8.4 million.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this week, according to figures provided by Rentrak, were “The Night Before” ($4.1 million); “Spectre” ($4 million); “The Peanuts Movie” ($2.7 million); “Spotlight”‘ ($2.5 million); and “Brooklyn” ($2 million).
