“Captain America – Civil War” was on track for a second huge weekend, and “The Jungle Book” also did strong business as the Walt Disney Company held a hammerlock on the top spots at this weekend’s box office.
The action flick possibly trying to explore political issues over government’s role in America, features a philosophical and physical battle between superheroes over government oversight of their efforts on behalf of humanity.
The film from Disney’s Marvel Comics franchise was on track to sell $72.6 million in tickets this weekend in the United States and Canada. “Captain America – Civil War” has total domestic sales over 10 days that are about a third of the $941 million that the movie has brought in globally, according to industry analysts at comScore.
The live action remake of the venerable “The Jungle Book” has been on the screen for five weeks, and still was going to have a $17.8 million weekend, good enough for second place. Its global sales were projected at $828 million.
Two new movies debuted in the 3 and 4 positions. “Money Master” — a suspense drama starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts and directed by Jodie Foster — premiered in third place with a $15 million weekend.
A low-budget horror film from Sony called “The Darkness” opened in fourth place with a $5.2 million tally.
And another Julia Roberts movie, “Mother’s Day,” rounded out the top five with a $3.3 million in projected sales.
Rounding out the 10 most popular films in the United States and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “Zootopia” ($2.8 million), “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” ($$2.6 million), “Keanu” ($1.9 million), “Barbershop: The Next Cut” ($1.7 million) and “The Boss” ($1.8 million).
