Three movies debuted in the top three positions at the nation’s box offices this weekend, but together they fell far short of the “Jurassic World” record set this weekend last year.
“The Conjuring 2” scared the wits out of moviegoers to the tune of $40.4 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates.
A movie adaptation of the video game “Warcraft” debuted in second place with $24.4 million in projected sales, and the sequel “Now You See Me 2” premiered in third, with a projected $23 million take.
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of the Shadows” was in fourth place, with an estimated total sales of $14.8 million this weekend and more than $61 million in the cash registers after 10 days of exhibition.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the the U.S. and Canada, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “X-Men Apocalypse” ($10 million), “Me Before You” ($9.2 million), “The Angry Birds Movie” ($6.7 million), “Alice Through The Looking Glass” ($5.6 million), “Captain America: Civil War” ($4.3 million) and “The Jungle Book” ($2.7 million),
