TV’s original Mr. Sulu on “Star Trek” is donating a trove of show memorabilia and other art to the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, it was announced Wednesday.

The collection will be featured in “New Frontiers: The Many Worlds of George Takei,” an exhibit set to open March 12.

Takei’s collection includes photos, sculptures, scripts and other memorabilia from “Star Trek,” along with material from his run for Los Angeles City Council in 1973 and the Olympic torch he carried ahead of the 1984 games in Los Angeles.

Takei, 79, is an activist for gay rights and spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign.

“It is an honor and a privilege for the Japanese American National Museum to be the repository of the George Takei Collection,” said the museum’s interim president and CEO Ann Burroughs.

“George is fearless in his stand against discrimination and injustice, and in his determination to take on the toughest social issues and protect the most vulnerable,” she said. “He is an inspiration to the Japanese American community and to people across the world.”
