When screen legends Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty accidentally read the wrong Best Picture winner at the 89th Academy Awards on Sunday night, social media went nuts.
The “Bonnie and Clyde” duo mistakenly announced “La La Land” had won the big prize, and the movie’s cast and crew took the stage to claim the Oscar.
In fact, “Moonlight” was the Best Picture winner.
“I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That’s why I looked at Faye, and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny,” Beatty said after the error was discovered.
It’s still not clear why the mixup occured, but social media turned the snafu into comedy gold.
