The Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences rescinded the sound mixing Oscar nomination for Greg Russell who worked on the documentary short subject, “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” because he violated Academy campaign regulations, according to media reports.

The announcement to rescind the nomination came Saturday after Russell was found to have violated strict rules applied to telephone lobbying, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said in a statement.

The Academy voted Thursday to pull Russell’s nomination following the revelation Russell had called fellow members of the Sound Branch to make them aware of his work on the film, Isaacs said.

The (Academy) takes “very seriously the Oscars voting process,” she said.

The prohibition on contacting Academy members by a nominees even extends to checking to see if a screener film or other mailing was received, Isaacs’ said..

The film’s other sound mixers Gary Summers, Jeffrey Haboush and Mac Ruth remain eligible to win an Oscar. Their competition includes sound mixing teams from “Arrival,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “La La Land” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
