DreamWork’s “The Boss Baby” topped North America box offices with its debut this weekend, and Disney’s juggernaut “Beauty and the Beast” remained close behind.
March has set a new record for film attendance, with the biggest ever cumulative total for the month at about $1.171 billion, up 23.4% from last year’s former high, according to Paul Degarabedian at comScore.
“The Boss Baby,” a PG-rated flick featuring the voices of Alec Baldwin, Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy Kimmel, Tobey Maguire and Steve Buscemi, pulled in $49 million.
Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” had its third strong weekend performance, garnering $47.5 million. That puts the film’s total viewership in North America near the $400 million mark; internationally, the film is up to $876.3 million.
In third place was “Ghost in the Shell” from Paramount. The sci-fi action film starring Scarlett Johansson brought in $19 million in weekend sales.
The final seven most-popular movies this week, as estimated by the studios, were “Power Rangers” ($14.5 million), “Kong: Skull Island” ($8.8 million), “Logan” ($6.2 million), “Get Out” ($5.8 million), “Life” ($5.6 million), “Chips” ($4 million) and “The Zookeeper’s Wife” ($3.3 million).
