Ralph Macchio will be getting back to his karate roots and reuniting with an old on-screen foe when he stars in a YouTube Red reboot of “The Karate Kid,” the streaming service announced Friday.

Macchio will reprise his role as Daniel LaRusso in “Cobra Kai,” a series of 10 half-hour episodes. He’ll be joined by his original “Karate Kid” rival, actor William Zabka in a return to his portrayal of Johnny Lawrence.

According to YouTube Red — a paid service of streaming movies, series and music — the show will pick up 30 years after the events of “The Karate Kid,” with Johnny Lawrence now down on his luck and trying to seek “redemption” by reviving the Cobra Kai dojo and facing off with his old rival, LaRusso, who is trying to keep his life in order without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi.

“The show is about two men addressing past demons and present frustrations the only way they know how: through karate,” according to YouTube Red.

The series will debut in 2018.
