Powered by his video “Humble,” Compton-born rapper Kendrick Lamar will carry a leading eight nominations into Sunday evening’s presentation of the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, while show host Katy Perry is tied with The Weeknd with five nods.
“Humble” is nominated for the top prize of video of the year, along with The Weeknd’s “Reminder,” Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic,” Alessia Cara’s “Scars to Your Beautiful” and DJ Khaled’s collaboration with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, “Wild Thoughts.”
Lamar is also nominated in the newly created category of artist of the year, combining the previous categories of best female and best male video of the year. Also nominated are Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd and Lorde.
Vying for best new artist are Khalid, Kodak Black, SZA, Young M.A., Julia Michaels and Noah Cyrus.
The traditionally raucous ceremony will be held at the Forum in Inglewood, and will feature performances by Kendrick Lamar, Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, Fifth Harmony, Lorde, Perry, The Weeknd, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Shawn Mendes, Alessia Cara, Kyle and a dual performance by rocker Rod Stewart and DNCE. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift will present the premiere of the video for her newly released single “Look What You Made Me Do.”
Pop star Pink will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, honoring her “trailblazing impact” on the music industry, fashion and pop culture. She joins a list of past recipients that includes Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Kanye West, Rihanna, Guns N’ Roses, the Beastie Boys and, of course, the award’s namesake, Jackson.
