For the 17th time in a row, a Marvel comic book hero- style movie opened nationally with a number one showing, as “Thor: Ragnarok” crushed the market with an estimated $121 million weekend tally.
The Disney/Marvel film’s opening weekend is the fourth-highest of the year, and reversed a rather tepid autumn sales track for the industry.
Thor had opened overseas earlier, and has already racked up an estimated $151 million this weekend alone globally. Overall, Disney/Marvel will have $427 million in Thor’s account by the close of business Sunday evening.
“A Bad Moms Christmas” opened in second place, with an estimated $21.6 million in weekend domestic sales.
“Jigsaw” has a $6.7 million weekend, and over the last 10 days will have cleared an estimated $28.8 million by the end of the weekend, according to studio reports.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the United States and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “Tyler Perry’s Boo 2” ($4.7 million), “Geostorm” ($3 million), “Happy Death Day” ($2.8 million), “Thank Your For Your Service” ($2.3 million), “Blade Runner ” ($2.2 million), “Only The Brave” ($1.9 million) and “Let There Be Light” ($1.6 million).
