Taylor Swift burnished her reputation, and Jimmy Fallon secured his legend as a caring guy Monday as they combined to mourn his mother, Gloria.

Fallon returned to “The Tonight Show” after canceling a week’s worth of shows in the wake of Gloria’s Nov. 4 death at at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City.

“She was the best audience,” Fallon said. “She was the one I was always trying to make laugh, and she was such a fan of the show and everything I did.”

His telling of a hand-squeezing custom and Swift’s performance of a song tailor-made to the moment brought tears to many viewers.
