Trump repeats ‘Pocahontas’ slur amid Navajo code talkers

President Trump often refers to Sen. Elizabeth Warren as Pocahontas. But he stirred the pot especially hard Monday while appearing with Navajo code talkers.

“You’re very very special people,” Trump said at the White House. “You were here long before any of us were here. Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas. But you know what. I like you. Because you are special.”

Warren shot back: “It is deeply unfortunate that [the] president of the United States cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without having to throw out a racial slur.”

At the White House briefing, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders denied her boss made a racial slur.

Rawstory reported this exchange between MSNBC’s Kristen Welker and Sanders:

Welker: “Why is it appropriate for the president to use the racial slur in any context?”

Sanders: “I don’t think it is appropriate for him to use a racial slur or anyone else.”

Welker: (After noting out that many people see Trump’s language as a slur): “Why is it appropriate?”

Sanders: “Like I said, I don’t think it is. And I don’t think — that was certainly not the president’s intent.”

Welker: “Does he see political value in calling people out racially? Why use that term? Why use that term?”

Sanders: “I think Senator Warren was very offensive when she lied about something specifically to advance her career. I don’t understand why no one is asking about that question and why that isn’t constantly covered.”
