A businessman writing checks to a group supporting Senate candidate Roy Moore in Alabama owns some Taco Bell franchises in Florida.

So that means Taco Bell itself backs a Republican accused of child molestation?

That’s the twisted logic of folks spreading the word that the fast-food company is turning their stomachs politically.

Hoax-busting site Snopes.com has examined the facts behind the belief — Taco Bell (or its owner) is the main financier of Alabama politician Roy Moore’s Senate campaign — and concluded: “Mostly false.”

“Taco Bell is under the ownership of parent company Yum! Brands, which does donate to political candidates but which does not appear to have donated to Moore’s campaign,” Snopes said Wednesday after a Daily Beast story fueled the errant outrage.

Peter Nicholas, the donor in question, “is not the owner of either Taco Bell or Yum! Brands,” Snopes said. “He only owns Taco Bell franchises in Florida…. The majority of Taco Bells are neither owned nor operated by Nicholas. Calls for a boycott or an appeal to the chain’s corporate offices appear to be misguided.”
