Ten films have advanced in the competition for the visual effects Oscar, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday.

Members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch will be able to view 10- minute clips of the films on Jan. 6, and they will winnow the list to five Oscar nominees.

The films advancing in the category are:

“Alien: Covenant”;

“Blade Runner 2049”;

“Dunkirk”;

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”;

“Kong: Skull Island”;

“Okja”;

“The Shape of Water”;

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”;

“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”; and

“War for the Planet of the Apes.”

Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 23, with the 90th Academy Awards scheduled for March 4.
