There may be a new year coming, but Hollywood is flooding the movie theaters with popular old concepts, as three sequels claimed the top spots at the box offices Sunday.
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” was the number one box office champ this weekend, for the third straight week, with Disney projecting domestic box office sales of $52.4 million by the close of business Sunday.
The Star Wars reboot was on track to cross the $1 billion mark in global sales Sunday evening.
“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” was projected to sell $50.6 million in tickets by the end of Sunday evening’s showings, according to Sony data gathered by comScore.
“Pitch Perfect 3” was expected to draw $17.8 million in ticket sales by the end of the night.
Rounding out the top 10 movies, as estimated for the three nights ending Sunday evening, and as reported by the studios and gathered by comScore, were “The Greatest Showman” ($15.3 million), “Ferdinand” ($11.7 million), “Coco” ($6.6 million), “All the Money In the World” ($5.5 million),”Darkest Hour” ($5.3 million), “Downsizing” ($4.6 million), and “Father Figures” ($3.7 million).
