Mark Zuckerberg’s annual new year’s challenge to himself isn’t learning a language or running a mile a day on average. (He’s done both.)

In 2018, the Facebook CEO is tackling fake news — or at least what makes the world feel “anxious and divided.”

“Facebook has a lot of work to do,” he posted Thursday, “whether it’s protecting our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent.”

He also briefly notes a major slam against his billion-people-a-day platform: his monopoly of social media and online ad revenues.

“With the rise of a small number of big tech companies — and governments using technology to watch their citizens — many people now believe technology only centralizes power rather than decentralizes it.”

CNBC quoted Aaron Shapiro, CEO of advertising agency Huge, as saying Facebook faces four major challenges.

“The company needs to find its role in society, address mental health issues, assuage users’ privacy concerns and remain relevant while growing revenue. But while Facebook has done a good job at acquiring companies like Instagram, it’s never really addressed the other issues until now,” Shapiro said.
