Guillermo del Toro of “The Shape of Water,” Greta Gerwig of “Lady Bird,” Martin McDonagh of “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Christopher Nolan of “Dunkirk” and Jordan Peele of “Get Out” will compete Saturday evening for the Directors Guild of America Award for feature film directing.
The nominations are career firsts for all but Nolan, who was previously nominated for “Inception,” “The Dark Knight” and “Memento.”
Peele is a double-nominee, with “Get Out” also earning him a nod in the first-time feature film category.
Also nominated in that category are Geremy Jasper for “Patti Cake$,” William Oldroyd for “Lady Macbeth,” Taylor Sheridan for “Wind River” and Aaron Sorkin for “Molly’s Game.”
Since 1948, there have only been seven times the winner of the DGA Award for feature film directing has not gone on to win the Academy Award for best director.
The most recent time was 2013, when Ben Affleck won the DGA Award for “Argo,” but wasn’t even nominated for a directing Academy Award, even though the film won the Oscar for best picture.
Damien Chazelle won both awards last year for “La La Land.”
On the television side of the awards, directors of episodes of “Stranger Things,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Game of Thrones” are nominated for DGA Award for drama series, while comedy nods went to directors of “Master of None,” “Silicon Valley,” “Veep” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
“Game of Thrones” directors — Jeremy Podeswa, Matt Shakman and Alan Taylor — have three of the five spots in the drama series category, while “Master of None” directors — Aziz Ansari and Melina Matsoukas — are nominated twice in the comedy category.
Barry Levinson is nominated in the TV movie/miniseries category for helming HBO’s “The Wizard of Lies.” He will face off with Scott Frank for Netflix’s “Godless,” Kyra Sedgwick for Lifetime’s “Story of a Girl,” Jeanmarc Vallee for HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and George C. Wolfe for HBO’s “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”
Documentary film nominees are Ken Burns and Lynn Novick for “The Vietnam War,” Bryan Fogel for “Icarus,” Matthew Heineman for “City of Ghosts,” Steve James for “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” and Errol Morris for “Wormwood.”
The awards will be presented at the Beverly Hilton in a ceremony hosted by writer/director Judd Apatow.
