A judge Friday granted a petition by Mary Ann Mobley’s daughter that terminates her late mother’s trust so that about $5.1 million can be distributed between the former Miss America’s offspring and the decedent’s alma mater, the University of Mississippi.
The order by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Wada also granted a merger of the Mary Ann Mobley Collins Revocable Trust and the Gary Collins Revocable Trust.
Mobley’s daughter, Mary Clancy Collins White, filed her petition Feb. 23. White was born during Mobley’s marriage in 1967 to Gary Collins, an actor and talk show host who died in October 2012 of natural causes at age 74.
White’s petition stated that her mother’s trust was created in December 1988 to hold assets for the petitioner and her descendants. However, White is now in her late 40s, is the sole income beneficiary of the trust and there will be no future generations of beneficiaries, her petition stated.
When Mobley created her trust, it was not clear that her daughter would not have any children and never intended to have any offspring, the petition stated.
The trust holds about $5.1 million in cash, securities, real estate and other non-cash interests, according to the petition. Wada’s order gives about $3.1 million to Mobley’s daughter and the remainder to the University of Mississippi, which has agreed to name a theater named after Mobley and Collins, according to the petitioner’s lawyer, Allan Cutrow.
“Mary Ann was very loyal to the University of Mississippi,” Cutrow said after the hearing.
Mobley died of breast cancer at her Beverly Hills home in December 2014 at age 77. The film and television career of Miss America 1959 included two movies in 1965 with Elvis Presley, “Girl Happy” and “Harum Scarum.” She and Presley were friends and both were born in Mississippi.
Mobley was the first woman from Mississippi to be crowned Miss America. She was inducted into the University of Mississippi Alumni Hall of Fame in 1981 and was once a member of the Chi Omega sorority there.
