It was another summer weekend, another box office blockbuster for Disney and Marvel, as “Ant-Man And The Wasp” opened with a projected $76 million weekend haul.
The movie is the 20th straight number one premiere for Disney’s Marvel label, according to movie industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore.
The latest Marvel hit was projected to earn $85 million outside the U.S. and Canada this weekend, giving it an estimated $161 million opening worldwide splash.
The Disney/Pixar animated “Incredibles 2” was in second place, with a $29 million weekend. It has amassed $504.3 million domestically over four weeks, plus about $268.4 million overseas.
In third place, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” was on track to sell $28.6 million in tickets this weekend in North America. That helped it put it just over the $1 billion mark globally.
A new movie, Universal’s “The First Purge,” was in fourth place at $17.2 million. And “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” was in fifth place at $7.3 million in its second weekend.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and gathered by comScore, were “Uncle Drew” ($6.6 million), “Ocean’s 8” ($5.3 million), “Tag” ($3.1 million), “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” ($2.5 million) and “Deadpool 2” ($1.8 million).
