It was the “Revenge Of The ’80s Weekend” at the North American box office, as a close race developed between “The Equalizer 2” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.”

A sequel based on the 1980s TV show “The Equalizer” and starring Denzel Washington, “The Equalizer 2” edged into the number one spot, with an estimated $35.8 million total at the box offices in the United States and Canada.

Based on songs from the 1980s Abba catalogue, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” comes a decade after the first “Mamma Mia!” It was estimated to sell $34.4 million in its premiere weekend.

A monster looking for love on a boat remained strong: “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” was on track for $23.2 million in this, its second weekend. That brings its 10-day total to $91 million.

“Ant Man And The Wasp” buzzed to fourth place, with $16.1 million in sales in its third weekend, and $164.6 million in the anthill so far.

And “Incredibles 2” pulled in $11.5 million in this, its sixth weekend of business. It has accumulated $557.3 in the bank from the North America trade this summer.

Rounding out the top 10 movies in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and gathered by comScore, were “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” ($11 million), “Skyscraper” ($11 million), “The First Purge” ($5 million), “Unfriended Dark Web” (opening at 3.5 million) and “Sorry To Bother You” ($2.8 million).
