“Crazy Rich Asians” was the most-popular film in the United States and Canada for the third straight week, as it was on track to sell $28.3 million worth of tickets over the four-day holiday period.
By the close of business Monday, the end-of-summer romantic comedy was expected to have cleared $117 million domestically, according to studio estimates collected by analysts at comScore.
“The Meg” — the latest scary summer shark movie — was on track to add another $13.4 million this four-day weekend period, and attain a North American total of $123.4 million over four weeks.
“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” was on track for a $9 million take on this, its fifth weekend of showings. It will have brought in $206.4 million through Monday evening in North America.
A new movie debuted in fourth place: “Operation Finale,” a thriller based on the true story of the Israeli government’s infiltration of an Argentinian Nazi cell, harboring German war criminal Adolf Eichmann. It was on track for $9.5 million in sales by Sunday night.
“Searching” was expanded into wide release for the first time, and was on track to open in fifth place with $7.6 million in weekend sales.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies, as estimated by the studios for the first three days of the holiday weekend, were “Christopher Robin” ($6.6 million), “Alpha” ($6 million), “The Happytime Murders” ($5.5 million), “BlacKkKlansman” ($5.3 million) and “Mile 22” ($4.6 million).
