Nominations will be announced Wednesday for the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, with Bradley Cooper, Glenn Close, Lady Gaga and Christian Bale likely to be among those earning nods for the coveted honors that are voted on by fellow actors.
Cooper and Lady Gaga have been raking in nominations and critical acclaim for their co-starring roles in the Cooper-directed “A Star is Born,” as have Close for her work in “The Wife” and Bale for his transformation into former Vice President Dick Cheney in “Vice.”
Olivia Colman is also a virtual lock for a nomination for her work in the period piece “The Favourite.” Melissa McCarthy could also land in the best actress category for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” with other contenders including Viola Davis for “Widows” and Emily Blunt for “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Viggo Mortensen of “Green Book” is a good bet to land in the best actor category with Bale and Cooper, and nods are possible for Rami Malek for his role in the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Willem Dafoe for his work in “At Eternity’s Gate.”
In supporting roles, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz could both earn nominations for their work in “The Favourite,” along with Amy Adams for “Vice,” Regina King for “If Beale Street Could Talk” and Claire Foy for “First Man.”
Sam Elliott is a likely nominee for his supporting work in “A Star is Born,” as are Timothee Chalamet for “Beautiful Boy,” Adam Driver for “BlacKkKlansman” and Mahershala Ali for “Green Book.”
The SAG Awards does not have a “best picture” category, but its equivalent honor is for outstanding ensemble cast in a film. “The Favourite,” “A Star is Born” and “Vice” are almost guaranteed nominees in the category, with “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians” also considered strong contenders.
In the television categories, shows such as “The Handmaid’s Tale,” reigning champion “This is Us” and “The Americans” are likely to land nods for best ensemble cast in a drama. For comedies, look for HBO’s “Barry” to land on the nominations list, along with Emmy winner “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and potentially “Atlanta,” “The Good Place” and “The Kominsky Method.”
The SAG nominations will be announced by actress/singer Awkwafina, who appeared in “Crazy Rich Asians,” and Lavern Cox of “Orange is the New Black.”
The SAG Awards ceremony will be held Jan. 27 at the Shrine Auditorium. Last year, the show was hosted by Kristen Bell — the first time the ceremony has ever had a host. There was no word on whether a host will be tabbed to lead January’s event.
