Long Beach’s 2019 Veterans Day Celebration was held Saturday with the 23rd annual Veterans Day Parade and Vets Fest street fair featuring music, food and vendors.
The parade began at Atlantic Avenue and Harding Street and proceeded southbound on Atlantic Avenue to South Street.
More than 50 organizations marched in the parade, including the Long Beach Airport, the Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Transit and Junior ROTC units from Lakewood and Paramount high schools.
The grand marshals were:
— Brenda Threatt, the assistant director of Veterans Services at El Camino College and a major with the California State Guard;
— retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Robin Umberg and her husband, state Sen. Tom Umberg, D-Santa Ana, a retired U.S. Army colonel; and
— the Rev. Leon Wood, who served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
The Aquarium of the Pacific’s Aquarium on Wheels was at the Vets Fest, along with representatives from the Los Angeles Veterans Center and various Long Beach city departments.
“Great morning honoring our Veterans and I want to thank the North Long Beach community and (Councilman) @RexRichardson for organizing the parade,” Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia tweeted. “Thank you to all who have served and (Sen. Lena A. Gonzalez) for marching with us.”
Gonzalez, D-Long Beach, spent a portion of the parade riding in an antique fire truck driven by a retired firefighter who was a Korean War veteran.
