Eight county library branches in the Coachella Valley will be closed Wednesday for New Year’s Day.

The local Riverside County library branches, located in Mecca, Indio, La Quinta, Coachella, Palm Desert, Thousand Palms, Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs, will reopen Thursday.

Local libraries hold a variety of free events year-round for people of all ages.

Upon reopening, the branches will host the following events on Thursday:

— Mecca branch, 91-260 Ave 66. Movie Thursday in the children’s area, 3 to 5:30 p.m.

— Coachella branch, 1500 6th St. Preschool story time in English and Spanish, 11 a.m. to noon, followed by preschool yoga and storytime in English and Spanish, 2 to 2:30 p.m.

— Palm Desert branch, 73300 Fred Waring Drive. Preschool story time will include puppets, songs, finger plays and crafts for kids ages 3 to 5, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a ukulele string circle for beginners and advanced players in the community room, noon to 2 p.m.

–Cathedral City branch, 33520 Date Palm Drive. Gate time for kids in the community room includes card games, board games and video games for all ages, 3:30 to 5 p.m.

— Thousand Palms branch, 31189 Robert Road. Bilingual pre-K storytime, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by family board game night from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
