A stretch of Fourth Street between Cesar Chavez Street and Palm Avenue in Coachella was closed to thru traffic for a second consecutive day Thursday due to unknown police activity on the block.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department acknowledged the closure Thursday on social media at 4:46 p.m., warning motorists to avoid the area until further notice.

The department did not specify why the road was shuttered.

A sheriff’s forensics vehicle was reported to be on the scene since Wednesday, according to KESQ. Police tape cordoned off the block starting Wednesday before noon. Neighbors reported being woken up by gunfire at 2 a.m., the television station reported.

Heavy machinery was seen digging up dirt Thursday at a house on the block, and authorities were seen stacking pallets of cinder blocks at that house as well, KESQ reported.

Sheriff’s officials did not return a request for comment.
