Carson’s city-owned gymnasium, where Kobe Bryant once filmed a commercial, was renamed Friday as the Kobe Bryant Gym in honor of the late retired Los Angeles Lakers star.

The Carson City Council unanimously approved a motion renaming the gym.

“This is a heartfelt gesture by the city of Carson to name a basketball gym that Kobe Bryant visited to memorialize his legacy as a basketball player, husband and father,” said Mayor Albert Robles, who authored the resolution renaming the gym.

“Kobe Bryant was an individual whose tirelessness and competitive drive as a professional were as notable as his commitment to family and friends, and what better to pay tribute than right here in the heart of the South Bay, a basketball gym in Carson where he was considered like a friend.”

Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26 along with his daughter Gianna and seven other people.
