The Netflix romantic drama “Virgin River” was the most-watched streaming program on the four streaming services measured by Nielsen in the first full week that its 10-episode second season was available.
Viewers watched 1.793 billion minutes of “Virgin River’s” 20 episodes between Nov. 30 and Dec. 6, according to Nielsen’s latest streaming report which was released Monday.
“Virgin River” was third the previous week with 1.295 billion minutes watched.
“Virgin River’s” second season was released Nov. 27.
“The Crown” was second for the week after back-to-back first place finishes in the first two full weeks its fourth season was available, with viewers watching 1.458 billion minutes of the 40 episodes of the Netflix drama about the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
The week’s other program to top the 1 billion minutes watched marked was the 2005-13 NBC comedy “The Office,” third for the week with 1.312 billion minutes watched of its 192 episodes.
There were two programs in the latest Top 10 that were not in the previous week’s.
“Selena: The Series,” The Netflix biographical drama about the slain Tejano singer, was fifth for the week, with viewers watching 823 million minutes of its nine episodes in the three days it was available.
The 2005-20 The WB/The CW horror series “Supernatural” was seventh, with viewers watching 694 million minutes of its 327 episodes. This was “Supernatural’s” first appearance in the Top 10 since the initial report which was issued Sept. 5 and covered the week of Aug. 3-9.
Dropping out of the Top 10 were the Netflix film drama “Hillbilly Elegy” and the seven-episode Netflix miniseries “The Queen’s Gambit.”
“The Mandalorian” was the only non-Netflix programming in the Top 10 for the fifth consecutive week. The Disney+ “Star Wars” series was fourth for the week, with viewers watching 994 million minutes of its 14 episodes, including the sixth episode of its second season, which became available Dec. 4.
Nielsen also measures viewership for Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.
The Top 10 consisted of four original streaming series, the streaming film “The Christmas Chronicles 2,” and five series that originally aired on North American broadcast networks.
The Top 10 programs were “Virgin River”; “The Crown”; “`The Office”; “The Mandalorian”; “Selena: The Series”; “Grey’s Anatomy”; “Supernatural”; “Schitt’s Creek”; “The Christmas Chronicles 2”; and “Criminal Minds.”
